As creatives, we tend to focus all our time on the product, and then dismiss Instagram as an ego-stroke or vanity platform to receive positive feedback about their art. So, is Instagram needed and why do we target 10,000 followers?

Instagram should be seen as innovative platform to popularise our art. There are huge benefits that Instagram gives to accounts that are considered influencers.

One of the first is having 10,000 followers: this enables you to add a link to your Instagram story which, for a creative is essential, as you can add a link to your website or store, and move towards monetizing Instagram.

Getting 10,000 followers sounds like a huge la big job right? but before splashing the cash on ads, here are some organic strategies that have been used to gain thousands of followers in 90 days:

POST EVERY DAY: To build a relationship with your audience, they want to know you are an active account. The numbers vary per source, but it’s estimated that less than 10% of your followers will see your post. So post regularly to reach more people

POST NEW CONTENT: Keep your content fresh and new. You can recycle content, but I’d recommend you only recycle on a 3-4 week basis. And archive older posts

POST ABOUT YOURSELF: You want about 80% of your content to be about your art, product or your brand, but don’t forget to introduce yourself. Show pictures of your creative process, your studio and favourite products. Your audience likes to see you too.

COMPLETE YOUR BIO: Your bio is essential online real estate. Complete the description, your website link, add your picture and contact information.

ADD LINKTREE: is a free tool for optimising your Instagram traffic, whether you’re a blogger, an artist or run a content platform. You’ll get one bio link to house all the content you’re driving followers to. Let your content live longer than the feed. to learn more you can check out here

CREATE A LOOK: Your page needs to have a look that reflects you as this is where your audience learns more about you. If they like what they see, you will gain a follower. To create a look get creative. I have seen fashion influencers use filters to pull together a visual look. You can also create a look by curating your posts. I have an Instagram account for my dog, Beau. He is a Coton de Tulear, so I only post a picture of him

FOLLOW OTHER PEOPLE: As a social media platform, it enables you to create social media relationships with Instagrammers. When you show interest in other people, they will often check out your page or follow you back

COMMENT ON OTHER PEOPLE’S POSTS: Make intelligent comments to show you’re interested in what they are doing, but avoid using tons of emojis as it won’t create a connection.

REPLY TO COMMENTS ON YOUR POSTS: Review your posts and reply to comments. For the engaging ones, take time to send a thoughtful reply. Or use a heart emoji to acknowledge that you saw their comment.

MANAGE YOUR FOLLOW/FOLLOWING RATIO: Instagram only allows you to follow 7500 accounts (this number reduces the more followers you gain). So you need to make sure more people follow you. As your account moves towards an influencer, you’ll want to have two followers to every one person you are following. The fewer you follow, the better. After you hit 10K, you will want to start refining your following so you can grow your following and reduce the number of people you are following.

USE HASHTAGS: Hashtags put your images in streams organized by content. This will put your image in front of a new audience. You are limited to using only 30 hashtags. While growing your audience, use all of the hashtags that you can! Your hashtags need to be relevant to your post. The tip to creating your hashtag list is finding a general collection and boutique. General hashtags are like #art, #artist #paintings which have millions of posts. Your image will be buried quickly in the post stream. Yet if you are posting at peak times, you will increase your likes. Boutique hashtags have around 20-90,000 posts, and your post won’t be buried as quickly. I use hashtags like #floralart #wherewomencreate #artbusiness.
