Artist: Georgia Patton       Artwork: Orange #1       License This artwork

There is a belief in some quarters that the beauty of licensing art is that one painting can be licensed many times to create multiple revenue streams. That may work in theory but manufacturers have different needs and one painting won’t match all their requirements on art style, colour, theme and how the art is formatted.

So, every painting an artist creates may NOT be suitable for licensing or even suitable for licensing on multiple products. Consider the different industries that art locks into:

Jig-saw Puzzles: Artworks do not have a lot of “white-space and more colourful with contrast background and presented in a collections of four to six designs or artworks.

Gift Cards: Manufacturers want art that expresses an emotional me-to-you response in the consumer. Artsworks that resonate with consumers with themed in mind.

Wall Papers: Manufacturers want designs in pattern repeat and artworks available in several colour ways.

Home decor: This art will have muted unsaturated colours, while other industries want saturated colours.

Ceramics – artworks preferably have white back ground

Christmas themed art: Used by most industries, but certain themes won’t work for all.

Paintings of landmarks and scenery work well for wall art and jig-saw puzzles and greeting cards.

So if you want to maximise the possibility of licensing your art on multiple product categories, you may need to create art that matches the requirements of as many industries as possible.

Artists need to create art that can be reformatted in several ways to fit on different product shapes. Reformatting can be accomplished by planning art elements before doing the actual painting and then performing minimal Photoshop manipulations after scanning the art. It can be done by painting icons and backgrounds, scanning them, and manipulating everything in Photoshop, or creating art on computer and manipulating it all in Photoshop.

If you don’t have Photoshop skills, ArtSHINE works with many associates who can help with:

  • Product mockups
  • Portfolio and submission layout
